The Proposal

I was flying to Washington, D.C. to visit with Steve for the July 4, 2000 holiday. We'd been doing the long-distance dating for a year and we were both tiring of always having to say goodbye to each other after only a few days together.

We had planned on going to the fireworks display in downtown D.C. -- Fireworkswhich is always spectacular. So, July 4th -- we hopped on the subway and went downtown early in the day -- and spent the afternoon doing the tourist bit in D.C.

That night, we went to the Lincoln Memorial to claim our spot to watch the fireworks. (The entire stretch from the Lincoln Memorial past the reflecting pool to the Washington Monument was PACKED with people.) The fireworks started around 9:30 or so and lasted for almost a full hour. They have some of the best fireworks in D.C. -- really beautiful ones and they just go up one right after the other -- there's no break. Anyway -- the finale starts, our faces are lit up by the fireworks in the sky, and thats when Steve proposed!

And the rest, as they say, is history :)
